364 - Airplane Home

This was probably the most quick, brainless, and cliché photo I've ever taken- and it was at an Airplane Home in the middle of nowhere.

Yes, I know what you're thinking. Why? Why did you take a photo that's been taken by thousands of people and saturated across Instagram? One that doesn't require any special lighting conditions, composition, hike, or thought?

Well, I have a confession to make. I chase bucket shots sometimes. Not all the time, but every once in awhile. The draw gets to me. I feel an overwhelming NEED to have the shot in my library. And when I'm driving within 30 minutes of one, the urge takes over.

This shot that I'm about to show you is one of the most iconic and replicated drone shots in all of America: an airplane in the middle of a forest taken from above. Here's the photo I got:

“Love Shack”

DJI Mavic Mini

ISO 200 ~ 4.49mm ~ f/2.8 ~ 1/10s

Just by looking at it, you can see there's no room for originality. Despite the fact that it's a really fucking cool shot, there's no other angle you can see the plane above. I mean, you could say non-mid day lighting is helpful so you don't get blown out trees, but that's the only barrier to get a slightly better drone shot then the masses.

However, the guy who runs the place IS extremely interesting. At least from what I read on his website- I didn't get to meet him in person. Long story short, he lives in the plane and build it out to be a home. He'll often give concerts, tours, and host almost anyone for almost any reason.

To get the shot we literally pulled over for about 5 minutes, flew in his property, and took the photo. If this seems off to you, it's not. His website actively encourages you to fly drones over his place, and even to just walk on his property any time during the day. His only warning is that he might be naked because he's a part-time nudist and well, it's his property. I think he just likes the attention.

Like I said, we didn't get to meet him, because our van wouldn't make it up his steep driveway, but I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area. All the reviews on Google Maps say he's a nice guy. Do yourself a favor and check out his website- it's an entertaining read.

Alright. That's it for today. Call me a photo bagger, I don't care.

I’m on a mission to explore as much as humanely possible.
