392 - Bixby Bridge

Now THIS was an easy shot. Oh my god. Probably one of my easiest in a LONG time... Today we took photos at Bixby Bridge.

Bixby Bridge is a famous bridge along Highway 101 right before Big Sur, and there's always a ton of people taking photos of it. We rolled up about two hours before sunset to ensure we had a solid parking spot.

Today I decided I was going to use my drone. For almost our entire journey down the West Coast, I'd barely used it at all... And it's one of my favorite tools to shoot with. The problem was we were spending so much time in National Parks and tall forests, where it's either illegal or extremely impractical.

So FINALLY we had arrived at a place where I could utilize the Mini, and I decided I wasn't allowed to touch my normal camera for this shoot. Just pure one on one drone time. Dreamy.

I stepped out of the van about 15 minutes before sunset, knowing I'd be able to snag a photo of this place like a breeze. I'd scoped it out upon arrival, and knew the general direction I wanted my drone.

My goal was to face the ocean, to give it that nice backdrop with a hazy sunset corner. And like clockwork, I loaded the drone up and snagged this bad boy:

It baffles my mind how some shoots are so easy and some are so difficult. I think I talked about this in at Sentinel Dome, but I'm going to continue that thought here. I think a lot of it depends on your mood. Heck, maybe all of it does. I was super happy-go-lucky today to be shooting with the drone again, so it felt easy to get a banger.

Yesterday's shoot at Point Lobos also had a similar vibe. I'd met another photographer who was shooting long exposure seascapes, so I FELT the need to do that too... But I felt disappointed when I couldn't find anything remarkable, probably because I wasn't feeling it. I NEEDED to shoot birds, because it was something new and exciting... And guess what? Those turned out to be my best shots.

Go figure. Now I just gotta learn how to psych the mood to be perfect every single time...

Anyways, solid shoot. Excited to utilize the drone more now that I'm veering out of National Parks for awhile.

I’m on a mission to explore as much as humanely possible.
